Additional Information

Scope And Methodology

The SBI Market Profile on Alarms, Alarm Systems, and Alarm Services analyzes the growth and profit potential of this dynamic industry. This comprehensive statistical database covers alarm and alarm system shipments, imports, and exports; the cost structure of alarm and alarm system plants; residential and nonresidential building markets; vehicular markets; security alarm monitoring services; and crime and fire loss statistics. In addition, major service providers and equipment suppliers were profiled in order to uncover competitor strategies.

Alarm and alarm system market sales were calculated from shipments, export, and import trends (Section 1). Equipment data was combined with installation contractor revenues and alarm monitoring service revenues in order to provide a total picture of the size and growth of the U.S. alarm industry. Data trends were compiled from U.S. Department of Commerce surveys. Shipment and trade data are further segmented by market sector — intrusion, fire, and vehicular, and by equipment type — local (including smoke detectors), central station, direct connect, and hold-up systems (Section 2). Trade data is compiled from U.S. Custom Service forms and is provided by product type and major countries of origin and destination (Sections 3 and 9). Statistics Canada data looks at the Canadian market situation.

Residential, nonresidential, and vehicular markets are analyzed in Sections 4 and 5. Trade publication data review dealer revenues by system and service type, installations by market sector, the average price of residential security systems, and household penetration levels. Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys provide demographics of U.S. household smoke alarm purchases and alarm system service spending. These sections also include factors affecting demand including building construction trends, housing demand, remodeling spending, motor vehicle sales, and state vehicle registrations. The section on security system services also provides a regional revenue analysis (Section 7). These are correlated with crime statistics by region and state (Section 8). These data trends were compiled from statistics provided by various government agencies.

SBI also supplies data on the cost structure and profitability of U.S. alarm and alarm system plants (Section 6). Commerce Department data covering these plants are supplemented with individual company sales and profit margins to evaluate the competitive environment. A similar effort was made to collect company data on security system service providers. Company financial statistics were compiled as part of an exhaustive effort to provide competitor intelligence (Section 10). Annual reports, databases, and trade journals were searched for growth- and profit-oriented strategies of major global alarm and alarm system manufacturers and service providers.

Action-oriented executives are urged to use this competitive intelligence and comprehensive database to uncover growing product lines, expand service potential, penetrate key end-use market opportunities, and develop cost-saving operating strategies. Executives are urged to compute their own company’s market share and compare their company’s own operating ratios to the industry averages as part of this process.
