Scope and Methodology
This report data was obtained from government sources, trade associations, publications, business journals, company literature, and investment reports. The report also includes detailed analysis of consumer demographics, based on the data provided by Simmons Market Research Bureau (SMRB), New York. The data was pulled from SMRB’s National Consumer Survey (NCS) spring 2006 (May 2005-June 2006).

Shipment statistics are derived from the U.S. Census of Manufacturers and the Annual Survey of Manufacturers, and is estimated and forecasted by SBI. Import and export data by major country of origin is derived from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. Historical data are provided for 2001 through 2005, with forecast data from 2006 to 2010.

SBI designates the overall kitchen and bath fittings and fixtures as the market; the four main product groupings (plumbing fixtures and trim, plastic plumbing fixtures, vitreous china plumbing fixtures and bathroom accessories, and enameled iron and metal sanitary ware) as categories; and the various products within those categories as segments or even sub-segments. The market size of kitchen and bath fittings and fixtures is defined as the value of product supplied to the total U.S. marketplace, in a particular period. Therefore, market size is determined by supply rather than demand. The U.S. kitchen and bath fittings and fixtures market supply was calculated from the Department of Commerce statistics by collecting data from domestic plant shipments, adding imports, and extracting exports. As such, the formula for determining the market size will be Production in the U.S. + Balance of Trade [i.e. Shipments + (Imports - Exports)].

Also, note that the values are in net selling values, i.e., free on board (f.o.b.) from the manufacturing plant, and not the retail/wholesale price sold to the end consumer.
