SBI compiled and analyzed data on U.S. shipments, imports, consumer purchases, distribution channels, purchaser and bicyclist demographics, exports, plant operating ratios, and the competitive environment to uncover the trends affecting domestic bicycle demand. The in-depth industry investigation compares trends of U.S.- and foreign-based manufacturers, independent bicycle dealers and mass-market channels, and mountain bikers and road bikers. The competitive environment is analyzed by examining the product lines, marketing and distribution strategies, international operations, and acquisitions for 17 U.S. manufacturers and marketers. Leading manufacturer and marketer shares are calculated.
The SBI Market Profile on Bicycles is a guide to the growth- and profit-oriented opportunities in this industry. This comprehensive database covers U.S. shipments, imports, retail distribution channels, purchaser and participation demographics, exports and the Canadian market situation, the cost structure of U.S. plants, and the competitive environment. In addition, manufacturers and marketers are profiled in order to review competitor strategies. U.S. market sales are calculated from U.S. Department of Commerce statistics by collecting data on domestic plant shipments, adding imports, and subtracting exports (Section 1). U.S. market sales are calculated on a unit and dollar basis. Price trends are also evaluated from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index. Section 2 analyses the U.S. supply of complete bicycles and Section 3 analyses the U.S. supply of bicycle parts. The supply situation evaluates domestic shipments and imports. Shipments are for all domestic manufacturers, whether plants are owned by U.S.- or foreign-based companies and whether or not plants specialize (50% or more of total facility revenues) in bicycles and bicycle parts. Import data is derived from U.S. Custom records by product and main country of origin. SBI computed imports’ share of the total U.S. supply in order to judge the competitive position of foreign manufacturers. Retail bicycle distribution channels are evaluated in Section 4. U.S. Department of Commerce surveys provide data on total U.S. bicycles, bicycle parts, and accessories retail sales and by type of outlet. Bicycles are primarily sold through independent bicycle dealers or through mass merchant type outlets. Bureau of Labor Statistics survey results are used to calculate total consumer spending on bicycles. SBI utilized this data to determine the share of retail sales that is parts and accessories. Simmons Market Research Bureau data provides demographics of the U.S. adult bicycle purchaser and the adult bicycle rider (Section 5 and 6). Demographic snapshots are provided by sex, age, race and ethnicity, marital status, household income, education, occupation, household size, children by age, kind of residence, and region. Simmons provides additional data on the demographics by the price of the bicycle purchased, where the bicycle was purchased, mountain bikers versus road bikers, and by frequency of bicycling activity. The National Sporting Goods Association also provides participation statistics for all U.S. bicyclists by sex, age, and income, and compares mountain bikers by on-road or off-road preference. Foreign market purchases are analyzed in Section 7. This is accomplished by compiling Department of Commerce export statistics for complete bicycles and bicycle parts by type. Shipments are further segmented by major country of destination. The Canadian market situation is evaluated from Statistics Canada data. SBI also supplies data on the cost structure and profitability of U.S. plants specializing (50% or more of total plant revenues) in the manufacture and sale of bicycles and bicycle parts (Section 8). U.S. Department of Commerce data covering these plants are supplemented with individual company sales data in order to calculate company market share. Company sales statistics are compiled as part of an exhaustive effort to provide competitor intelligence (Section 9). Annual reports, databases, and trade journals were searched for growth- and profit-oriented strategies. Action-oriented executives are urged to use this comprehensive statistical database and competitive information to develop new products, target key demographic markets, strengthen distribution channels, expand foreign market sales, and initiate profitable operating strategies. Executives are urged to compute your own company’s market share and compare your company’s operating ratios to the industry averages as part of this process.
