Increasing home sales and growing remodeling activities in the United States had a positive bearing on the market for small kitchen appliances. In addition, innovative U.S.-produced products coupled with lower-priced imports are luring customers to purchase small kitchen appliances. To maintain sales in an extremely competitive market, manufacturers are upgrading their offerings by incorporating new technologies and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of their products.

Small Kitchen Appliances in the U.S. analyzes small kitchen appliances that are used for domestic purposes only in food preparation. All major appliances used in kitchens, for instance, microwave ovens, refrigerators, and stovetops are out of the scope of the report. Moreover, kitchen appliances used in professional kitchens, i.e., in the hotel and restaurant industries, have not been covered in the report.

SBI classifies the small kitchen appliances into the two categories:

  • Electrothermal Appliances
  • Electromechanical Appliances

Electrothermal appliances are classified as appliances that produce heat by using electricity as the source of power. The various small kitchen appliances that fall under this category include: coffee makers, espresso makers, toasters, toaster ovens, corn poppers, slow cookers (crock pots), deep fat fryers, rice cookers, egg cookers, steam cookers, bacon fryers, griddles, grills, hot plates, tea makers, electric kettles, panini makers, and pizza makers.

Electromechanical appliances are defined as appliances that generate motion to run parts such as motors and blades by using electricity. The various small kitchen appliances that fall under this category include: blenders, mixers, grinders, shredders, slicers, food processors, ice crushers, juice extractors, food choppers, etc.

In addition to presenting industry statistics, this report identifies key trends affecting the marketplace and profiles major manufacturers and end users.

Scope and Methodology
Data for Small Kitchen Appliances in the U.S. were obtained from government sources, trade associations, publications, business journals, company literature, and investment reports.

Shipment statistics were derived from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Industrial Reports and estimated and forecasted by SBI. Import and export data were obtained from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The market size is defined as the amount of small kitchen appliance products supplied to the total U.S. marketplace, in a particular period. Therefore, market size is determined by supply rather than demand. The U.S. market size for small kitchen appliances was calculated from Department of Commerce statistics by collecting data on domestic plant shipments, adding imports, and extracting exports. As such, the formula for determining the market size for small kitchen appliances will be Production in the U.S. + Balance of Trade [i.e. Shipments + (Imports - Exports)].

Note that the values are in net selling values, i.e., free on board (f.o.b.) from the manufacturing plant, and not the retail / wholesale price sold to the end consumer.
